Protist Paper Slide Assignment

The Protist Kingdom:  

Mainly single-celled, eukaryotic organisms

Some scientists call this the "Junk Drawer" Kingdom because this is where many organisms are placed when they don't know how else to categorize them!

While looking at the pond water in class, determine which protist you and your lab partner observe under the microscope.  Together, you will research more information about your protist and create a Paper Slide Video (like the one Mrs. Dokken made about Science Bucks).  You will show your video to the class as a final project.  Below are the requirements for the video.  The rubric can be found in the file cabinet.  

With your lab partner, make your video colorful and creative, but also keep it informative and detailed.

20 points

Requirements:

1. Name of organism
2. Size of the organism
3. How does the organism obtain energy? (Eat, make own food)
4. How does it move?
5. Where is it located (under rocks, bottom of pond, surface of ponds?)
6. How does it reproduce?
7. One extra interesting fact about your protist :)

You must include at least one picture of your protist!

At least 3 sources (internet, book, etc.) must be used and cited for your project.

First Day of Class...What is it?

Blood, fish scales, saliva, or bubbles?  What are we looking at?  You will know the answer soon!

No, this is NOT earwax!  Lots of students put that for an answer though! :)

Welcome to 7th Grade Biology!

Summer 2013 Family Trip to Colorado

Summer has come and gone once again, but I am so glad to have you in 7th grade biology!  Be ready to explore, test, challenge yourself, think critically, and learn about life!  We are going to start off the year with an activity called "What is it?"  You are about to get a glimpse of what you are going to learn this year!

Frog Dissection!

The Human Eye

Top two things that students in class found most interesting about the human eye:

1.  The pupil is actually a hole into the eye, not a "black dot".

2.  It's cool how images seen by the right eye are taken to the back of the brain through the optic nerve and interpreted on the left side of the brain!

The Nervous System

Your Project due, Monday, May 13th, is to build a 3-D model of either a brain or neuron.  You do not need to purchase expensive materials for this!  See what you can recycle from your house in a creative way!  The model must be labeled with the important parts!  You also must attach a detailed explanation to your model explaining the parts!  Please do some research and find new information that we have not yet discussed.  You have general knowledge of the parts, but I want you to show me that you have gone deeper!  Use the rubric to make sure you complete the project properly. (Rubric is in the file cabinet)

The project is worth 50 points!

Digestion

Study your notes (computer and paper) each night to make sure you understand this system!  :)  It's not hard to understand, there is just a lot of information.  Be sure to know your enzymes and chemicals that break down the different types of foods:  saliva (amylase), pepsin, protease, HCl, and bile are the main ones.
